My KidsCan Experience

Being a contractor, I am fortunate to be able to work with some incredible companies. For those of you who know me, you will know that I love to work with people who are focused on giving back and making the world a better place. I have spent the last 5 months working with the KidsCan team, and wow, just wow what an amazing experience.

Our team and I say our because it truly is like a family, are so passionate about getting the story out there, and getting regular donors on board. Everyone who works at KidsCan is there for a reason, for the good. It’s a small team, of dedicated superstars who are passionate about making a difference, making New Zealand the best place to live. Where all Kiwi kids get the best opportunity to learn, the best chance to grow. They are fed, they are warm and they know that the world cares about them.

Lead by the awesome Julie Chapman who started KidsCan 13 years ago in her garage. She sits in the driver's seat, and with her door always open it’s been amazing to sit alongside her in meetings and discuss her whys.

Julie really wants to make a difference. What I love about her, is she is straight up, she is passionate and man is she driven. She is at our distribution days, chatting to the kids, helping them put on their new raincoats and shoes. She’s fronting the media telling her story and fighting for Kiwi kids using her voice and visibility to get their stories heard. She sheds a tear when she hears another story and tries to find new and different ways to help Kiwi kids get a better life, the life they deserve in our Clean Green New Zealand.

Charities are always questioned about how they spend their money. At KidsCan I can assure you that every dollar they spend is scrutinised to ensure that they are spending it wisely. There are no fancy coffee machines (it’s a kettle) no fancy offices (we are based in an office above the warehouse), no long lunches or crazy trips at the last minute wasting money. Every dollar is accounted for, every person is the team is driven to spend as little so we can invest as many dollars into our programmes as possible.

Why? …

For the kids, because there are way too many kids in New Zealand who are living below the poverty line and are missing out on too much. And you know what, it’s NOT THEIR FAULT! The team at KidsCan are focused on helping kids get the best chance in life. Working with schools (741 of them) AND having just launched into ECEs (25 of them). The focus is on how can we better help Kiwi kids stay in school longer, so they have the best chance at getting an education and breaking out of the poverty cycle.

Some would say that’s a huge lofty goal, but if you don’t have those huge lofty goals then what are you aiming for?

Now, this isn’t meant to sound like a pitch, however social responsibility is becoming more important for consumers when they are looking at companies to invest in, to follow, to buy products from. More and more consumers are wanting to buy from companies that are socially responsible.

If you are personally, or as a business looking to support a charity wanting to do good, wanting to show your customers or your friends that you care, that you want to help make New Zealand a better place to be. Please consider supporting KidsCan, I can promise you, your money is being invested with a team who are doing everything they can to help Kiwi kids break the cycle of poverty in New Zealand.
